The typical experience at a visit is a long wait to see your provider with very little accomplished. You have complex problems with complex solutions. Most visits are for 15 minutes or less! The doctor doesn’t listen to the whole story, how can they possibly treat the whole story?
Doctors, nurse practitioners (NP), and physician assistants (PA) have to balance time constraints and giving their full attention. They are trained to find the issue quickly and provide a plan. The back story often distracts them, when they need to focus on the now.
Here are some tips to make the most of your time.
- Write down the complaints. These are the things that are bothering you right now that need a treatment. Include everything, even if it is minor. Hand the list over and let them ask you for details.
- Bring your information. Give a list of your medications, diagnosis, and logs. They can look them over if needed. Go to Printables for some easy forms to use.
- Keep it Simple. Explain briefly in 1 or 2 sentences about your issue. If you have several problems, start with the one that bothers you the most.
- Write notes. The visits are quick! It’s easy to forget things when you are stressed. Write down any diagnosis, advice, or treatment you are given.
After your visit is over, the provider will write a note called a Visit Summary. You can access this through the patient portal online or request a copy mailed to you from the office.
